KitchenBridge I: Bretxa Market

The Bretxa Market was inaugurated in 1870 and owes its name to the assault in the 18th century by the troops of the Duke of Berwick, which opened two breaches (bretxas) in the walls of San Sebastian. The project, designed by Antonio Cortázar, has been remodeled over the years and the two main buildings from those days remain.

Located in the heart of the old quarters of San Sebastian, the Bretxa Market offers the best of both land and sea. On the ground floor, there are stands that sell fruit, vegetables, canned goods, delicatessen products, meat and fish. The farmer’s stalls are located outside, where you can buy vegetables, flowers, cheese, etc.

La Bretxa is one of the places you must visit when you are in San Sebastian. It is also the perfect place to begin the second day in Basque country with our guests.
